You probably set New Year’s resolutions for yourself every year, but did you know you can set healthy goals for your pet as well? As you create your own New Year’s resolutions this year, create some goals for your pet too. Your pet’s health and wellness needs change as they age, so it’s the perfect time to set some of these important goals for 2023.
Start the New Year with a Visit to the Veterinarian
Yearly veterinary visits should always be a part of your routine. An annual veterinary visit allows your veterinarian to check your pet’s overall health and dental health, as well as evaluate his weight, diet and exercise routine, and any changing health needs. Ask your veterinarian if you need to make any changes to your pet’s diet or lifestyle going forward in the new year.
Get More Exercise
Without enough exercise and play time, your pet may display unwanted behavioral issues out of boredom. Try to get in a long walk each day, or make time for 10-15 minute increments of play time throughout the day. If your pet is acting bored, listless, aggressive, or is whining, chewing, barking, or having accidents in the house, he may need more attention, exercise, or play.
Maintain a Healthy Diet
Your pet’s diet is another thing that may change in the new year. Your pet may have vitamin or nutritional deficiencies that you need to address, or the veterinarian may recommend a change in diet to prevent age-related health problems like diabetes, obesity, and kidney issues. Make sure your pet is following a healthy diet throughout the year.
Regular veterinary visits should be a key part of your pet’s New Year’s resolutions. If you haven’t taken your pet in for a veterinary visit in the last 12 months, schedule an appointment in the first part of the new year.
